Renovation and remodelling of The Ivy, rooftop restaurant  and events venue.

Innitial ideas for this restaurant renovation were to utilize the venues inherent potential.  Magnificent views of the city and afternoon sunset were obstructed by a balustrade wall, we sought to harness these views by
repurposing the existing floor timbers into a new raised deck  area to lounge  and take in the views.

A new garden planter serves as focal point. We designed  couch-like bunk seating  along the  deck perimeters to  allow for extra seating and new  light steel furniture to suit the overall vibe.

We designed a new custom bar built from repurposed beer bottles and created a new outdoor sushi area

The vision is for a house to provide retreat yet remain connected to the urban context.

The front and back yards are formalized into functional outdoor spaces, providing the house with a direct link to nature, shaded seating, and braai areas.

The existing structure is carefully demolished and repurposed into new building material to be used in the construction of garden and interior elements.

Competition

The Ijora Arts District is a thriving art and culture community located at the gateway between the Lagos islands and the mainland. Recognizing the urgent need for housing and inclusive sustainable urban development, but also the need for practical and accessible spaces for people to engage with arts in practice and performance.

The neighbourhood is repurposed from underutilized buildings of a bygone industrial era, swampland and vacant harbour land. A large public park is carved out of the tropical overgrowth to anchor the neighbourhood with
communal space for recreation, sports and outdoor gatherings and events. Beyond the park, a new promenade connects Ijora Arts District to the greater city as it stretches from The National Theatre, along the Ebute Metta water edge and finally linking up with Lagos Terminus.

Old warehouses are converted into Mixed-Use buildings for people to live, work, enjoy the arts, cultural events and the city’s excellent natural assets.
A new Intermodal Transport Station located on Eko Bridge grants access to commuters arriving by train, car, bicycle, motorcycle and on foot. A new jetty along the promenade caters to those using water transport.

The Power Station becomes the central hub of Ijora Arts District. The building is conceptualised as 3 main volumes, each well-ventilated and well-lit with large openings, windows and skylights allowing natural light to flood into the enormous volumes. These 3 main volumes then form the shell comprising a variety of flexible (S/M/L/XL) multipurpose spaces for the public, corporates and institutions to use. These sheer volumes also allow for used including exhibition of very large art installations and sculptures.

Harrogate Hall is an apartment  renovation project located in Essenwood, Durban. The duplex occupies the top two floors of a typical three-storey Berea building.

We were commissioned to find architectural solutions to increase and/or improve on the existing living space to allow the owner to take advantage of the year round sunshine entertain better.

We considered three options:

1. Extend existing balcony
2. Create new rooftop terrace atop existing roof
3. Improve layout of current living space

Although seemilngly straight forward, the strategy to extend the existing balcony would prove to be a nightmare because it only room for extension is on top of somebody else’s roof (the apartment below).

The solution was thus to open the plan by demolishing portions of the kitchen wall, allowing for a centre island which doubles as additional dining space.

A new terrace on the roof level unlocks magnificent views of the Indian Ocean, overlooking the magnificent Durban skyline. The space is made complete with an outdoor lounge and braai area.

Cafe concept to uplift a dark and underutilized hotel lobby at the Cabanas Beach Resort in Umhlanga

We were asked to develop a concept and space plan in order to articulate a business idea and bring the proposal to life. The proposal: a new coffee shop within an existing and operational resort hotel lobby.
The concept helped to affirm that exact requirements of the business are indeed feasible within the existing parameters.
